I am a software developer seeking a solution for computerized go-karts. Looking for some type of computer to mount in the dashboard for display purposes and to run a custom application with limited user input. Some of the requirements would include;
a clear display, visible in low light situation (color would be great)
touch screen input (or simple buttons like a game controller)
wireless networking (for local network)
ability to program custom applications (preferably .Net compatible)
a rugged unit capable of taking a some shocks.
output port for direct communication to the kart's motor ECU - something like usb, serial or firewire
will need 100 units or more (eventually), so they need to be readily available with expectations for future compatible versions.
There are proprietary black-boxes and separate displays for this kind of thing, but I was trying to consider other, potentially better and simpler options. The thought occurred to me that PDA technology may now be a good option, but I know nothing about them and need a little direction to get started. So...
Can PDA's provide a solution for this? What specific technologies, types or models should I consider (Palm vs. PocketPC, or some of the gaming PDAs)? Should I consider tablet pc's?
