Nokia E61 EDGE and T-Mobile Settings

Hi,

I read the MobileTechReview of the Nokia E61 and it clearly states the phone is EDGE capable. I am using the E61 in the NYC area on T-Mobile, but so far my browsing experience has been slow, and also emails so I assume I am only using GPRS. Is there a "secret" setting that I have to apply? How can I find out if whether or not I am "on EDGE"? Is there a site I can try for speed tests?
