PC Update plus Beryl Installation
      04/16/07 12:56 AM

Linux PC Update
Tanker Bob picked up a y-cable to split one of the power leads, thus bringing the Zip drive off of vacation. I also cleaned up some of the cable routing. Like the initial boot up, Kubuntu Linux recognized the "new" Zip drive right away with no issue.

Speaking of no issues, I've bumped up the dynamic overclocking to 10% with no problems. The CPU, video card, and system temperatures haven't budged. I take that as license to push the envelope even harder.

The Crown Jewel
I couldn't wait to try out Beryl 3D Desktop for Linux. After all, that's why I wanted the 8800GTS card. I followed the excellent directions here to add the Beryl repository and install the software. That page also points to this page with explicit NVidia instructions and this page with detailed additions to the xorg.conf file.

One more hint on the NVidia driver setup for Beryl. In the NVidia configuration program, under "X Screen 0"/"OpenGL Settings", set "Image Settings" to "High Quality." This setting seemed to not only enable Beryl to load and run, but also made it more stable.

WARNING: Beryl is beta software (currently version 0.2x). Don't mess with it if you are not an experienced user. By default, Beryl closes itself and loads your usual desktop manager if something goes wrong. However, it can also lock up your system with the loss of all unsaved data. If you get painful hangnails or unsightly warts, don't blame Tanker Bob. You've been warned!

Beryl looks great and the e-GeForce 8800GTS really shines in 3D, plus its temperature seems pegged at 54C. The Beryl cube concept quickly grows on you, and it is super configurable. I have yet to plumb its depths.

However, Beryl doesn't always play nice with some of the features in KDE's native multiple desktop system. I set the desktop thumbnail in the system tray to not dispay neither icons nor mini-thumbnails for programs. Also, don't move windows to other desktops using the KDE system--they will vanish although the program will still be running. I've also found some minor display issues, but overall, Beryl looks great and makes the multiple desktop concept work more naturally.

Final Assessment
This newly-assembled PC flies with the Beryl 3D Desktop running. Screens appear almost instantly. Programs load far more quickly than in my previous system, even using the same hard drive. The real payoff, though, is in multitasking. Even with the taskbar packed with running programs, including multimedia playing, this PC runs like each program is the only one executing. Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!
