iPhone Game Review: Game of da Dead

There is a fascination about zombies that infects most of us and even kids that see them for the first time. It is hard to tell why because they are kind of dead and disintegrating? Go figure.

Anyway, if you like zombies (and I like them too) this game is another great alternative to enjoy them, which means to eliminate them by using a reasonable arsenal.

Once installed you will have a neat icon with a cut title: Game...Dead. Not too bad this time though.

Loading time is not long and once done a well designed interface is displayed. A New Game revels the 5 worlds to fight for (just the first is unlocked) with 20 levels each. A reasonable content but there is no story (I was expecting some) nor a survivor mode to play with.

Strangely the game does not have any high score system. It is all about the 5 worlds.

You control a rotatable turret at the center of the screen (joystick at bottom right) equipped with a Rocket Launcher and a Machine gun (buttons at bottom left). By the way, the rocket launcher has an interesting shot approach: you have to keep pressing the button to determine the distance and then release it to fire.

In addition there is a limited number of Land Mines (to use them just double tap the ground), a limited number of Seeking Missiles (double tap a Zombie) and 10 cool power-ups, that includes turret upgrades and a devastating air attack (to collect a power-up just draw a straight line to its direction but don?t forget to protect the soldier that will collect it).

In resume, you have a really good set of weapons to reach the game main goal: protect humans by eliminating Zombies.

Easy, Normal and Hard modes are available.

The controls work well but try to add land mines when there are less zombies otherwise you may trigger a seeking missile.

Each level has a fixed number of humans to protect and once they reach the turret the level is over. By the way, a level ends abruptly so maybe something like ?kill the last zombies to end the level? would be better.

At the end of the level you?ll see an informative screen that includes the next level goal. Strangely at the end of the last level of the first world the same screen is shown and nothing special is displayed. I was expecting a different approach because the first world is done and it is a big deal? Or not?

Sadly the turret upgrades are not carried to the next world. This lack of worlds connection is not so good because part of the fun is to play with a powerful turret and after 20 levels go back to the simpler one is a bit annoying.

The game has its own style and graphics are polished. Even the interface itself (e.g. initial screen) is well designed.

When the turret is upgraded it becomes visually more powerful. It is really good though, as I said before, each world starts with the same basic turret. However, the animation is not up to the upgrades. A double cannon shooting animation, for example, is the same as the single cannon one. It needs improved animations to match the overall good graphics.

The game has good sound effects and music. It even supports iPOD music along with game sounds.

However, as it happens with graphics the shooting sound does not change along with a turret upgrade. It would be great to hear stronger sounds when you have powerful weapons.

Good graphics and interface
Smooth and interesting gameplay
Nice set of weapons
100 levels
Easy, Normal and Hard modes
It can resume
iPOD music support along with music sounds

Level ends abruptly
No story
Turret upgrades are reset from world to world
No high score board
Shooting animation does not follow the turret upgrade
Shooting sound does not follow the turret upgrade

Game of da Dead is a refreshing shooting approach that put together several elements in a well designed way. Upgrades, power-ups, rockets, mines and machine gun are all there to help you protect humans from zombies. A great fun!

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4- it just needs better animations
Sound: -4- too linear (does not reflect upgrades)
Controls: -5- no problem found
Gameplay: -3.5- good set of weapons and power-ups but the worlds are not connected (a new world means the basic turret all over again)

Playing Hints and Tips:

Keep the turret rotating for a fast aiming
Make use of all weapons, don?t save too much
Make sure to check in game Help and lear about each power-up
