iPhone Game Review: Boggle
Reviewed by Leah Jennings

Do you enjoy word games? Maybe your favorite board games have gone mobile? Then Boggle has it covered for you. Boggle is a fun yet difficult word game that is constantly challenging even the best of word game players.

Gameplay

Boggle's board consists of a 4x4 square of letter dice. To start the game you shake the device to shake all the dice and change up the letters. You have 3 minutes to find as many words as possible...and how do you do that? Easier said than done, you can select any letter as the first letter of the word, then you can select any letter surrounding it and keep doing so until you end up with a word. Usually you get one point per word depending on how many letters used - the more letters, the more points.

There are 3 different game modes to choose from: Classic, Advanced, and Self Score mode. Classic mode is the normal gameplay. In Advanced mode, you have 3 different options: Portal Cubes, which switches the first and last dice of every word you choose; Panic Flip, which when there?s 20 seconds left on the clock a new board configuration appears; then you are also able to choose your time limit, 1-10 minutes. In Self Score mode-according to the instructions in the game-you?re supposed to be able to play by your own rules and score yourself how you want, but I can?t get this mode to work. You can set your time limit and turn panic flip on/off, but you can?t select any letters. So hopefully, this will be fixed in the next update.

There?s also an Achievements section, where you can look at all of your game statistics and see what achievements you have unlocked. You can even challenge a friend to play the same game board you just finished and see if they can beat your score.

Graphics and Sound

Clean 3D graphics give this game a good feel. The thematic colors are orange and blue, coinciding with the original game. The music is an upbeat lounge type music. The sound effect when you shake the dice makes the gameplay more realistic.

Conclusion

I?ve really loved playing this game, a quick and challenging 3 minutes here and there isn?t bad to enjoy this game if you?re busy. Very addictive, because you?re always trying to beat your last score, and find one more word.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4- Clean 3D graphics, classic Boggle colors.
Sound: -3.5- Simple back track, with great sound effects.

Playing Hints and Tips:

-Always form words, whether small or large.
-Keep your eyes open for words surrounding the letter ?S? since most words can become plural.
