iPhone Game Review: Slug Wars
Reviewed by JadeDragon

If you are one of those gamers who enjoy the fighting more than the foraging in an RTS game, then Slug Wars is the game for you. Inventive and imaginative, Slug Wars is a fun real time strategy game that has an endless gameplay and verses battles. You command an army of slugs and march them into the enemy territory, and kill any enemy slugs along the way.

Gameplay

When you think battle troops and super soldiers slugs are hardly on top of the list, yet here they are with their destructive weapons and a no-quitting spirit. Slug Wars did a great job at designing the slug characters (soldiers) that have different functions, speeds and weapons. You will need to learn their abilities and make quick decisions on which units to utilize to against specific enemy units. Some slugs are fast moving but don?t have a super firepower, others move slowly but can shoot long range missiles. There are also spy slugs who move unpredictably but very deadly when they strike and there are the super nuke slugs who carry a super sized cup filled with salt. When they dump the salt everyone within range dies including the slugs on their own side. The gameplay has a great dynamic thanks to the design of different types of slugs and their speed and power feel very balanced. You can't just use one kind of slug to win the battle.

Slug Wars is fun to play also thanks to three very different game modes. Campaign mode is where you learn the ropes of the game and unlock slug units as you advance in the endless levels. The battles are easier in the beginning in this mode as you only have limited unit types to control, and the AI plays a bit easier on you. As you take control of the super units (so do your enemy) each battle (level) gets longer and more difficult. The AI feels very balanced, and it doesn?t get too hard too quickly. The game also has skirmish mode where you put everything on the table and try to win it with all slug units and their powers at your disposal. If you have a gaming partner you can play the aptly names ?Slug-It-Out? game mode where two players can duke it out locally.

The game has a great interface that?s easy to learn and easy to use. There is a quick tutorial available any time from the title screen in case you missed something in the beginning of the Campaign levels. There are neither scoreboards nor a lefty-mode control.

Graphics & Sound

You will never look at slugs the same way again after you?ve played Slug Wars. The game has colorful and adorable slug characters, each looks very different from the others. The graphics look polished and the touch controls work smoothly.

Sound FX is appropriate with cute and creative voice-over. There is no background music only some title music pieces.

Conclusion

Slug Wars is an unexpectedly fun RTS game for the iPhone and iPod touch. The game has a unique design and very dynamic gameplay with a focus on fighting peppered with foraging (picking up the flowers as you move along). Different gamers should find a game mode fits them the best in three different modes, and for those who are in it for the long haul, the game gives you endless fun. It?s $0.99 on the iTunes App Store now ? well worth the money if you are an RTS fan with a spirit for a good fight!

Playing Hints and Tips:
