iPhone Game Review: Robin Hood: Archer of the Woods
Reviewed by ninjackid

Ok, so what's green, wields a bow and arrow, steals from the rich and gives to the poor and wears a funny hat and funny tights?

If you guessed Robin Hood, you're right! (if not well then... now you know).

In the latest endless bow-defense game from Clickgamer, Robin Hood: Archer of the Woods, our beloved hero and thief of Sherwood forest goes all-out one-man army against wave and wave of enemy knights attacking your village with nothing but a bow, arrows and his trusty funny hat. And it's your job to keep the poor village safe.

Robin Hood: Archer of the Woods is an endless high-scored based bow defense game that pits you against waves of various enemies. Your job is to protect the villages' huts by shooting down the soldiers that have come to destroy them. Like most games of the genre, the hero is placed at the far left of the screen with enemies pouring out of the right to pillage and plunder. After a certain amount of waves, a boss such as the cow-dragon (yes, you read that right) and a troll donning a bright pink dress will come along and makes things harder.

Enemies are well designed and varied in this game, with your average knight taking one hit, and some that come at you faster, or take more hits to destroy. All enemies can be killed in one blow with a headshot except for bosses, who are a little bit tougher to kill and require precise aiming to dispatch them faster. To help with dispatching more powerful enemies, the game gives you power-ups. Power-ups will appear along the map, such as nuke arrows, tracer arrows, etc. and can be used by simply shooting them with your arrows.

All this makes for a great bow-defense game that will keep your attention for a while with great humorous bosses and creativity, but the fact that there is only one main game mode, survival, may be a disappointment for some players and may leave them wishing for more.

Not unlike any other well known bow-defense game for the iOS, the controls for Robin Hood are kept as simple as tapping and sliding your finger backwards on the screen to set the power and aim of your shot, and releasing to fire. A trail of your last arrow then appears on the screen, helping you to better your aim and hopefully destroy your enemy. You can zoom in and out to view more of the map by pinching the screen and you can tap and hold either side of the screen to pan left and right along the map.

Graphics & Sound

The graphics are extremely well done with a cartoony Ye Olde feel to them, and look very good. The backgrounds alternate between bright sunny days, to reddish sunsets and overall look great.

The sound design is exceptionally. All the sound pieces come together to convey the feeling of Robin Hood-ish, and are perfect for the theme. The soundtrack changes to a more dramatic, epic soundtrack when a boss is near. iPod music is also supported. So you should expect the whole package in the audio department.

Overall, Robin Hood: Archer of the Woods is a great bow-defense game for those have a few minutes to spare, as it?s easy to pick up and fun to play. But like many casual games, Robin Hood lacks the gameplay depth needed to really stick out in the genre for the veteran players. However, this doesn't stop it from being a very fun title and if you're looking for a good bow-defense game with a good sense of humor and fun gameplay, be sure to check this one out.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: - 5 - Graphics are great, and fit very well into the overall theme of the game.
Sound: - 4 - Good, epic music, also fits well with the game's theme. iPod music also supported.
Controls: - 4 - Simple slide-to-aim control technique works well, can be somewhat cumbersome to zoom in and out at times or to pan along the screen to view the attackers.
Gameplay: - 4.5 - Fun, creative and humorous bow-defense gameplay, but the lack of other gameplay modes might be a disappointment to some players.

Playing Hints and Tips:

-Aim for headshots as they give more points.

-When you get a power-up, use it wisely.
