iPad Game Review: Treasure Seekers 2: The Enchanted Canvases
Reviewed by Guy Dayen

G5 Entertainment brings back the Treasure Seekers to the iPad for a second adventure, following up "Visions of Gold" with this expansive new story. Nelly and her brother Tom are back for more excitement, as Nelly must save her brother from the clutches of a mysterious Romanian nobleman who is intent on discovering the secret of eternal life by obtaining the famous Philosopher's Stone. Use your skills at finding hidden objects and solving puzzles to free Tom and bring back the fabled Stone.

Gameplay

Once again, G5 Entertainment brings an exciting and involving adventure for lovers of the Hidden Objects genre. In this new escapade, Nelly?s brother Tom went off by himself in search of the Philosopher's Stone. He?s disappeared, and is now a prisoner in a mysterious Romanian castle. It?s up to Nelly to find and rescue him; and to do it, she must enter several enchanted paintings as she progresses in her quest to locate her brother. Along the way, she will meet various characters who will point her in the right direction, and give her the tools and clues she needs to solve the mystery of Tom?s whereabouts, if she completes the tasks that they set before her. Be sure to keep an eye on the task bar, so you know what you should be working to accomplish at any particular point in the game. There will be plenty of peril, and lots of thrills before Nelly can finally be reunited with her beloved brother.

Players will explore six different sites, and scour fifty different scenes to find everything Nelly needs to complete her quest. There is enough content to keep you playing for hours. The game responds well to the touch, both in the scenes you must explore, and in the inventory section. Objects that require multiple parts in order to work expand automatically, so you know exactly what to search for, and the game provides visual clues to help you in your search for the things hidden in less obvious places.

Those seeking a relaxed experience can play under the casual mode, while those seeking a more intense experience can choose to play under the advanced mode. In either case, the game is lots of fun, and is certainly worth the seven dollars asking price. It should be noted that his latest update supports multitasking under 4.2 and above, and also includes Game Center support.

Graphics

The artwork in Treasure Seekers 2: Enchanted Canvases is even better than it was in the first Treasure Seekers game. The look of the game seems crisper, and the castle locations give the setting of the adventure a grand feel. My only complaint is that some of the scenes are al little dark, and without being able to zoom in to the scenes, it is hard to locate some of the more cleverly hidden objects. Even on the iPad?s big screen, I?d really appreciate the ability to move in closer, and see more details as I search around the rooms and paintings. Perhaps G5 can keep this in mind for the next Nelly saga.

Sound

The music is well suited to the game play, and it is quite beautiful to listen to. Sound effects in the game are well done also, and they are not grating to hear when they come over and again. There is no setting to play your own music, but it?s not a drawback. You need to concentrate, so there?s no reason to blast your favorite play list here. Save it for a more casual game experience than the one afforded by Enchanted Canvases.

Conclusion

This game was great fun to play. It?s a great example of the hidden object genre. There are so many of these games out there now that players need more that just a list of a bunch of things to find in order to be satisfied with the game. A good story and a real challenge are a must if developers are to have any chance of competing and making a splash on the app store. Treasure Seekers 2 delivers the goods, and does so with superior graphics, interesting challenges and an engaging storyline.

Since there are two modes of play, there is a lot of replay value in Treasure Seekers 2. It also makes it well suited to a range of players, both in terms of age and experience with this type of game. Younger players will be happy to tag along with Nelly as she looks for her brother. Older players will appreciate the option of an advanced mode. Parents can feel comfortable knowing their kids are playing a well thought-out game; one that presents a good intellectual challenge to their younger children without surrounding them with the gore and mayhem that is often at the center of games targeted at older teens and young adults.

I highly recommend the game, and I look forward to the third installment in the adventures of the Treasure Seekers. I hope it comes soon!

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: - 4.5 - Beautiful artwork in this game. It?s a pleasure to look at. But some scenes are a bit dark, and the ability to zoom in would be a welcome addition to the game
Sound: - 5 - There?s no dialogue, but the music is quite pleasing and the sound effects don?t get on your nerves after multiple hearings. You won?t bother anyone around you, should you be playing at maximum volume.
Controls: - 5 - The game is very responsive. I didn?t need to touch objects three or four times for my touch to be registered by the game. That?s a definite plus when there is so much to do and discover.
Gameplay: - 5 - Quick summary of gameplay and replay value (one or two sentences)

Playing Hints and Tips:

? Some objects are hidden inside things like boxes, trunks or drawers. Keep an eye on the cursor to help you identify these locations.
? Remember that you may need to find all the parts of a particular objects in order to complete a task and find something which will in turn help you find something else.
? Keep an eye on the task bar to see which tasks need to be accomplished to fulfill the various goals you must achieve in the game.
