NookColor Case Review: Trident Aegis Series Case

What's Hot: Strong protection, highly functional case, water resistant.

What's Not: Adds some bulk to the nookColor.

Among all the popular ebook readers, the nookColor is one of the most sturdily built with plastic exterior over a metal chassis. Even so, if you are tossing the ebook reader in your travel bag or your beach bag with other gear, it's a good idea to protect it with a case. The Trident Aegis series case is a great choice if your ebook reader might get a little wet on the beach or experience bumps and shakes in a bag. The Trident Aegis case has a thick silicone cover that covers the entire body of the nookColor except the screen, and outside of the silicone cover the case adds a hard polycarbonate shell to provide more protection. What's the downside of this elaborate set up? The Trident Aegis case for the nookColor isn't a small or thin case.

Design

The Aegis Series case aims to provide as much protection as possible with its ?Enclosure System? that includes the silicone cover and the hard shell for the device and a screen protector for the display. The black silicone cover wraps around the nookColor exposing only the display and the bottom bezel where the nook home button lives, and covers all four corners of the nookColor. What?s more is that the silicone cover has double thickness that provides more shock absorption from bumps and small drops. The silicone cover is ultra smooth and won?t scratch anything on your nookColor.

While the silicone cover wraps around the nookColor like a glove, it does have cutouts for nook?s ports and buttons including the audio jack, the charge/sync port, the speaker grill, and of course the corner cover for the micrSD card slot. The cutouts don?t leave these ports exposed ? there are small covers for all cutouts. If you use a strap on the charm holder on your nookColor, you will find a small hole through the Trident Aegis case for your strap or charm to go through. You can use all the side buttons including the volume buttons and the power button while your nookColor is in the Aegis case; these buttons don?t have cutouts, they are under the silicone cover. The black silicone cover is thick, smooth and flexible, but it does show lint and attracts pet hair.

To add more protection, the Trident Aegis Series case for the nookColor has a hard shell that holds the structure of the case with a firmer grip. The polycarbonate shell covers the back of the case and wraps around all four edges but leaves the corners open. The hard shell feels rigid and has cutouts for the ports it covers. The hard shell also adds a splash of color to the black silicone case as it comes in 6 colors including red, pink, blue, yellow, green, black and the nice teal blue in our photos.

To protect the screen, the Trident Aegis Series case for nookColor comes with a screen protector and an installation kit that includes a cleaning cloth and a credit card sized screen protector applicator. The installation is easy and you can get most the air bubbles out if not all. The screen protector is scratch resistant and not easily smudged, and the nookColor?s screen is responsive under the protector.

Conclusion

If you take your nookColor on vacation or on the road, the Trident Aegis Series case provides some serious protection for your ebook reader. It will keep your nook safe from some water splashes (though not from submerging), small shocks and bumps and the elements. The double-layered case and a screen protector certain wrap your nookColor tight, yet your ebook reader is highly functions without getting out of the suit. The case isn?t thin or small though, but that?s the price you pay for a good protective system.
