What's Hot: Incredibly tough with an extra-thick and chunky silicone skin. Army green color is an eye-catcher in the boardroom and right at home in the field.

What's Not: Heavy and bulky, but, hey, what did you expect?

Gumdrop's Military Edition for iPad 2 is an extra rugged version of their Drop Tech iPad 2 case. It is only available in Army-44 Green, and includes dust filters for the speaker and microphone.

Size and Fit

The Gumdrop Military Edition case consists of a screen protector, hard polycarbonate shell, and an extra-thick silicone skin. The screen protector is unique in that it does not adhere to your iPad 2 but is instead a rigid plastic cover held in place by the polycarbonate shell. It is also replaceable. The hard inner case snaps together in seconds and fits the iPad 2 perfectly. Lastly, the silicone skin slides over the shell and is held in place by a series of slots and tabs. The end result is a very snug-fitting case that feels solid and tight in your hands. This case will add a great deal of bulk and weight to your iPad, but that is to be expected with this level of protection.

Features and Quality

There are two types of iPad owners; those who have dropped their iPads, and those who will. There is, of course, a third category of users who treat their iPads as if they were filled with nitroglycerine; never handling them unless they are sitting down in a tightly controlled environment. This case is not for them. The Gumdrop Military Edition is for the rest of us who revel in the portability of tablet computers, fearlessly walking around with them as we type, tap, and swipe; and do so in less than perfect conditions. Every port and switch is covered yet accessible, and even the speaker and microphone are protected by microfilm dust screens. Dust resistant, splash resistant, and drop resistant; this case does it all. On that last point, no one ever wants to see their iPad 2 go to ground, but when it happens you?re going to want it to be wrapped in this case. While the polycarbonate inner shell is pretty standard, the silicone outer skin is much thicker than anything else I?ve seen, leading me to speculate that the next time my iPad hits the ground, it may actually bounce.

Although the intended market of this case is civilians, it is clearly inspired by the military. From the army green color to the knobby texture, this case really looks the part. If, however, you want durability with a more subtle style, check out Gumdrop?s Drop Tech Series. You?ll lose the dust filters but have a much wider range of color options.

The Military Edition of Gumdrop?s Drop Tech Series of iPad 2 cases is one of the most rugged cases on the market; possibly THE most rugged. The army green color is eye-catching, as is the aggressive texture. The extra-thick silicone skin, the incorporated screen protector, and the microfilm dust filters really make it stand-out from the crowd. If you don?t like the color and don?t need the dust protection, however, stick with the regular Drop Tech models, which provide the same features as the Military Edition. Highly recommended.
