iPhone Game Review: Alien Space Retro Reviewed by ninjackid
Some of you may remember the amazing space shooter, Alien Space, from last Fall. But now, one-man-developer Owen Rodriguez has given Alien Space a face-lift in Alien Space Retro, giving the game slick retro graphics. But is the gameplay still there?
The fun, hectic, action-packed dual-stick gameplay present in the original Alien Space, is ever-present in Alien Space Retro, if not even a bit better.
The main games campaign features the same 30 levels from the original, along with a survival mode and a brand new game mode, that can be purchased for .99 cents from the In-App store, we'll talk a little bit more about that later. The game also includes four new weapons, 2 light and 2 heavy, which can also be purchased from the in-app store, for 99 cents each, or you can buy all weapons for 1.99 along with any future weapons that will be added.
The main game mode and survival mode has you surviving waves of enemies, avoiding asteroids and upgrading your weapons from level to level. Sounds easy enough right? Well, the AI in Alien Space Retro seems to be a tad bit tougher than the original. The alien ships have the same variety of weapons that you have access to, and these are no ordinary mindless enemies. You'll have to outsmart them to survive.
Every so often a boss enemy ship will come and make things tougher for you and changes the pace up a bit.
The new game mode available through IAP for 0.99 cents, Lost in Space, is a totally different and new experience than the main game modes. In this mode, you have no weapons, or even no enemies in that case. You are stranded in an asteroid field, with a heavily damaged ship that's constantly depleting energy, so any slight collision could be fatal. You have to constantly keep both eyes out for energy crystals to keep your energy up and avoid asteroids.
The graphics in Alien Space were simple, but worked fine for the game, but with Alien Space Retro, the developer did an amazing job with the graphics. They are reminiscent of old arcade space shooters, with neon bright colors and eye-catching explosions.
The sound was very good in the original Alien Space, and it is the same with Alien Space Retro, with epic soundtracks that totally immerse you into the gameplay, and the sound effects sound like they were taken from outer space, which is exactly perfect for this type of game. iPod music is also supported
Alien Space Retro is definitely a must-have for fans of the original, or fans of dual-stick space shooters in general. With slick graphics that look amazing, even on older generations of iPods or iPhones, and hectic gameplay with plenty of replay value, Alien Space Retro is a perfect addition to any space shooter fan's collection.
