What's Hot: Very protective, nice design with option for personal touches, has a stylus holder.

What's Not: Could take weeks to make.

Caseable is a DIY case specialist for notebook cases. Now they offer jacket style cases for iPad and Kindle devices with DIY cover designs. The iPad Book Jacket is a thick notebook style case that fits either an iPad or iPad 2, and you can design your own covers. Caseable has a good collection of images you can use to design your very own iPad book jacket, and allows you to upload your own images to modify the design. The iPad Book Jacket goes even further on the DIY meter by letting you add your logos, branding or any words you want to put on the case.

Design

The iPad Book Jacket from Caseable is a notebook style case with serious protection. Both the front and back covers are as thick as the covers found on scrapbooks and they are also very rigid. The case has a tablet holder on the right that uses four elastic corner bands to hold the iPad or iPad 2 in place. These elastic bands feel strong and secure at holding the tablet, and this corner band design leaves most of the tablet?s ports and buttons exposed for easy access. Since it?s not form fitting, you can use the case with either the iPad 1 or the iPad 2, or anything similar to the iPads? sizes. We tried the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Lenovo IdeaPad K1, both were too long for the iPad Book Jacket; the Sony Tablet S fits well length-wise, but it was too thick on one side to fit in the case.

The interior of the iPad Book Jacket is very soft and grippy with a microsuede like material. Depending on the cover design you use, the interior color matches or goes well with the cover design. The sturdy cover can certainly protect the iPad or iPad 2 from any objects in a bag or backpack that might poke, bump or scratch the tablet. It should also absorb some serious shock should you drop the tablet while in this case. Inside of the cover, there is a document slot where you can store sheets of paper. For those who use a stylus with their tablet, the iPad Book Jacket also has a stylus holder neatly tucked next to the tablet. The case has strong and perfect stitching and a long elastic band to secure the front cover.

One of the most attractive features of the iPad Book Jacket from Caseable is the ability to pick your own design from a collection of patterns, shapes, photos, paintings and typography. The collection isn?t the largest we?ve seen among DIY case makers, but each one of them is quite unique and most with bold colors and interesting style. Making your own Book Jacket is very easy as Caseable offers a web-based design tool to help you pick a design, then add your own touches such as putting pictures on the design, adding letters and patterns. You can also resize different elements and position them where you want them. We picked the iconic American car design and added our company name to the cover. We found the design process easy and painless.

Features

As mentioned, the tablet is sitting in the case secured by four corners, this leaves the top power button, mic and audio jack wide open, as well the button 30-pin connector open for easy access. The speaker grill on the bottom is also un-covered to let the sound through. The only buttons that you might have to work around the elastic strap with are the volume buttons and the screen lock button on the side, as they are right under the top right strap, but it?s not very difficult to do. The corner straps are well placed and don?t get in the way of using the touchscreen yet leave the front Home button and camera open for access.

The stylus holder is a thin one, and it will fit one of the thin styli but not those that you can use as a pen. However, you can clip the pen on the outside of the stylus holder, and the case has enough space to store a pen next the iPad or iPad just fine. Another interesting feature the iPad Book Jacket has is the built-in stand. The edges of both front and back covers are lined with rubbery material that?s grippy enough to allow you to prop up the iPad or iPad 2 in landscape mode. The case is rigid enough to hold the tablet in standing position steadily, and the rubber edges work very well at keeping the tablet standing up. We tried positioning the iPad 2 in different viewing angles and on different surfaces, the built-in stand worked well in all situations.

Conclusion

The iPad Book Jacket provides superior protection with thick inserts, rigid binding and secure stitching. You can choose a design and modify it to fit your taste or add your personal touches. The case is easy to use, has a stylus holder and can work as a tablet stand. The only caveat is that it can take up to a few weeks to make a personalized case.
