What's Hot: Very slim and light, perfect cutouts, and sleek looking.
What's Not: Sides are a little slippery, no protection for top and bottom of the phone.
Case-mate has released several cases for the new BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 including the Emerge Case we reviewed here. The Barely There case series is very popular especially for slim phones like the iPhone 4, and Case-mate makes two Barely There case models for the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930, the Barely There Case and the Barely There Brushed Aluminum Case. The Barely There case is a form fitting plastic case while the Brush Aluminum case adds an aluminum plate on the back. We look at the Barely There Brushed Aluminum Case which comes in two colors.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 smartphone has a sturdy build, but the Case-mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case certainly adds more protection to the back of the phone and more shock absorption. The case also prevents scratches to the back and sides of the BlackBerry to keep the device looking new. The Barely There and the Brushed Aluminum versions have the same cut, and fit the Bold 9900/9930 like a glove. The Brushed Aluminum case has a plate of aircraft grade aluminum inlay on the back of the case, where the rest of the case is made with plastic. The plastic sides are more flexible and make it easy to put the case on or take it off. The strong aluminum plate gives some serious protection from pokes or bumps to the phone.
The Case-mate BlackBerry 9900/9930 Barely There Brushed Aluminum case comes in black and silver. The black version has black plastic casing with gunmetal colored brushed finish on the aluminum plate; while the silver comes with gray plastic casing and silvery brushed finish metal. Both versions add a more expensive look to the phone thanks to the brushed metal finish. The case covers the sides and corners of the BlackBerry, leaving the front and most of the top and bottom open. The case does cover all four corners of the phone, giving support to the structure and helping with shock protection should you drop the phone. The case has a smooth plastic interior which will not scratch your phone, and it?s quite thin and weighs only 0.6 oz.
The Barely There Brushed Aluminum case has all the necessary cutouts that make the phone very functional in the case. The side cutouts leave the volume buttons, play/pause button and the convenience key open for easy access, and the charging/syncing port and the audio jack open as well. The back cutouts expose the camera, flash and speakerphone. Since the top and bottom of the phone are largely uncovered, you have access to the top screen lock button.
While the Case-mate Emerge case for the BlackBerry 9900/9930 has more rugged exterior and covers the front edges of the phone, the Barely There cases have a smoother plastic exterior that?s more slippery and barely covers the front. The brushed metal part of the case actually has more texture feel to it and gives you a better grip when you use the phone.
The Case-mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for the BlackBerry 9900/9930 is a thin and light case that protects your smartphone from scratches, bumps and pokes in a bag or travel case. The metal plate gives the phone better protection and a more expensive look. The phone is very functional in the case thanks to all the cutouts and the two color options look sleek. The case is more slippery than the Emerge case, and it doesn?t cover the top or the bottom of the phone.
