iPhone Case Review: Cygnett SecondSkin II iPhone 4S Case Reviewed by Tong Zhang
Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4
What's Hot: Thicker material, soft surface, and very functional case.
What's Not: Material attracts dust and lint, comes only in black.
Cygnett released three new cases for the iPhone 4S launch including the FlexiGel case, SecondSkin II silicone case and Ripple plastic case. You can check out our review of the FlexiGel case here. The SecondSkin II case for the iPhone 4S follows up the first edition with a form fitting design and thick and protective silicone material. The case is easy to use and gives you access to all ports and buttons.
The Cygnett SecondSkin II case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S comes in black and is very well made. The back cover feels more rigid than many silicone cases that don't keep the shape of the case very well, and the side covers are also reinforced with thicker material. The case feels soft and light in hand, and it's very easy to put it on and take it off of the iPhone 4S. We like that the case covers all sides of the iPhone 4 and it wraps around the cover the edges of the front glass so that the case will touch the surface when you put the phone face down on a table. The case feels sturdier than many silicone cases yet it's flexible. It will certainly keep its shape longer among silicone case offerings.
As with the FlexiGel case, the Cygnett SecondSkin II comes with a front film protector and an installation kit for putting the protector on. The only imperfection we've noticed on the case is that the material attracts dust, lint pieces and pet hair more than other cases, and it's not easy to get them off either. You can certainly wash the case with water to clean it, and that's probably the only easy way to keep it clean.
The Cygnett SecondSkin II case for the iPhone 4S has necessary cutouts for the ports and buttons on the phone. The bottom cutout is long and generous, and it exposes the 30-pin connector, mic and speaker in one long cut. Since the case adds very little bulk on the bottom, we were able to plug the iPhone 4 into speakers and docking stations while it was in the case. Nice! The Cygnett SecondSkin II has a small cutout on top for the audio out jack and top mic, and keeps the power button under the silicone cover. On the side, the case only has a cutout for the silence button that fits both AT&T and Verizon versions of the iPhone 4. The volume buttons are also under the protection of the silicone cover. All the buttons under the cover are easy to use.
The Cygnett SecondSkin II has a rear cutout for the camera and flash. The cutout fits fine, except it could have given the flash more space to fully illuminate. Both interior and exterior of the case have soft surface that won't scratch the iPhone's surface when handling the phone.
The Cygnett SecondSkin II is a simple yet very functional silicone case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It has a thicker silicone body than many others, which provides more protection against bumps and pokes in a bag or backpack, and keeps its shape longer. We like the design that covers all sides of the iPhone 4 and gives all ports and buttons easy access. The phone fits in most docking and audio accessories while in the case. We wish the material didn't attract dust, hair and lint so much, and it could use a couple of more color options.
