In Macally's new 2012 case line up for the iPhone 4S/4, the Glow-In-The-Dark Case is a unique one. It has a hard shell case that's protective and rigid, and a rubberized glow-in-the-dark material that covers the edges as well as adding small feet on the back to prevent slipping. The case offers easy access to all ports and buttons on the iPhone 4S.

Design

First of all, the Macally Glow-In-The -Dark Case is different from the GlowZone MoonSkins case for the iPhone 4S. Instead of using a specially treated silicone material, the Macally case has a hard shell cover. It provides some extra protection against pokes from sharp objects, bumps in a bag or backpack and shocks from minor drops, when compared to silicone cases. Another big difference between these two cases is that the MoonSkins case glows in the dark in a prominent way while the Macally Glow-In-The-Dark Case has a more subtle way of glowing. The photoluminescent rubber-like material on the Macally case only covers the edges of the case - about half height of the iPhone 4S' sides, and drips out to the back in four thin lines and ends with four small dots. The hard case has a dark tint, through which you can see the back of the iPhone 4S, and completely disappears in the dark. The rubber edges and the four small dots are the only things illuminate in the dark, outlining the iPhone 4S. As the glowing space is small, the strength of the glow is lot weaker than the MoonSkins Case's glow.

The glowing edges on the Macally case not only helps you with finding the phone in the dark but also makes it easier to use the case. The rubberized edges have some flexibility, making putting the case on and taking it off a lot easier than with a hard shell edged case. The rubberized edge also helps you better handling the phone as the hard shell case is slippery. In fact, it's very slippery if you only hold the phone on the back without touching the rubber edges.

Features

The Macally Glow-In-The-Dark Case for the iPhone 4S is a very functional case and looks well made. The case has three cutouts on the bottom for the mic, the speaker and the 30-pin connector, and they are perfectly aligned with the ports. The case fits easily with most docking stations and audio accessories. The Macally case has only one cutout on the side for the silence button, and it fits all versions of the iPhone 4. The volume buttons are protected under rubberized covers. It's very easy to press as the button covers are raised. The case has perfect cuts on the top as well for the 3.5mm audio jack and the top mic. As with the volume buttons, the power button is under cover, and has raised button that makes it easy to use.

As mentioned, the back of the Glow-In-The-Dark Case is slippery. Thankfully, the rubber feet give the case some traction when you put the phone on a slippery surface. The rubberized material also comes up just slightly above the display glass in the front, so when you put the phone face down, it will rest on the edges of the case instead of the display of the phone.

Conclusion

The Macally Glow-In-The-Dark Case for iPhone 4/4S is a subtle yet good looking case that provides good protection for the phone. The case is slim and light, and comes in dark tinted hard shell with grey rubberized edges. We like the durable hard shell that covers most of the phone including all corners and gives lots of protection. The glow in the dark feature is very subtle with a faint outline of the phone in the dark, just enough for you to find it. The case is nicely built, but there isn't any front display protection though you can get a film protector at an additional cost.
