iPad Game Review: Roads of Rome 2 Review

Reviewed by JadeDragon

Continuing the story of Victorius and Julia, Roads of Rome 2 picks up some time after Roads of Rome as the sequel gives us another 40 plus levels of frantic road building. Now married thanks to Victorius' efforts in the first game, Julia asks her husband to save her father Caesar who's been poisoned. Roads of Rome 2 has very similar time management style gameplay peppered with strategy element to clear road blocks. The graphics in Roads of Rome 2 have stepped up a notch compared to the first game and the game plays smoothly on the new iPad Retina display.

Gameplay

As with the first game, Roads of Rome 2 starts with simple time management tasks of building road while gathering food, wood and stone. Quickly, the gameplay requires you to sharpen your skills in multi-tasking as you build up a group of workers, upgrade buildings that produce food, wood, stone, gold and more. While the main goal is to build a road that gets you through the level, the game does a great job at giving other tasks, many of which are repeating from the last game but there are some new items you get to collect as well. The gameplay becomes more intriguing as the game presents you with obstacles to overcome such as road blocks, broken bridges and a new element: roadside bribery.

Roads of Rome 2 has a very nice progressing difficulty levels which is important in time management style games. You never feel overwhelmed by the tasks even at later levels, but the gameplay gives you the feeling of urgency. If you beat the timer for Expert level, you will reveal the statues in the title screen. In more difficult levels, you can replay them to gain better time. With over 40 levels, the gameplay feels meaty, and should last you at least 8 hours. After that you can replay for better records and share them on Game Center or Facebook. For those who hate being rushed, Roads of Rome 2 offers relaxed mode where there isn't a timer to rush your progress in the game.

Graphics & Sound

Roads of Rome 2 has reworked the graphics and has much more natural top-down view scenes compared to the first game. The buildings, road elements and characters look fuller and less cartoony like; and the user interface such as menus, pop-up prompts, etc. look more polished and sharper. The weather and day/night elements also look sharper. The map design is more complex in the sequel yet keeps the logic in tact so you never feel like certain task is too unobtainable because it's too far or too blocked. The water and air elements and units are as well done as road elements. Animations are smooth and don't have any lag.

Sound tracks in Roads of Rome 2 fit the gameplay well. The in-game music is light and pleasant, perfect to company the frantic gameplay. Title music tracks are different, and there's also voice over for various characters in the game. Sound FX reflects the action in the game, such as building houses, hamming logs and eating fruit.

Conclusion

Roads of Rome 2 is one of the most polished time management games for iOS. It has great level design, sharp looking graphics and non-stop action yet manageable. If you enjoyed the first game, the sequel offers better graphics but very similar gameplay. It's a little bit more challenging in later levels than the first game which might take a couple of tries to complete. For those who don't want to be rushed, there is a relaxing mode where there is no timer.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4.5- Sharp graphics and colorful levels. Animations are super smooth.
Sound: -4- Good sound tracks for the gameplay, enough sound FX to keep you entertained.
Controls: -5- Very responsive and well designed.
Gameplay: -4.5- Lots of hours of gameplay, replay value is good to beat the expert levels.

Playing Hints and Tips:

-Don't complete the roads if you want to collect items, or you will miss your chance.
-You can always replay the level to get the expert time.
-Watch your resources wisely and balance them so that you don't have workers waiting for certain resources.
