iPad Game Review: Wonderputt for iPad with Retina Review
Reviewed by JadeDragon
Wonderputt is an adventure golf game that shows us without fancy game engines or complex coding languages, what an incredible imaginary mind can accomplish. Wonderputt, developed in 3DStudioMax and Adobe Photoshop and Flash, is indeed a wonderful title for the iPad 2 and the new iPad with Retina Display. Originally released for the web, Wonderputt gives us 18 holes of golf course on different terrain, in different weather, on various surfaces, all presented in a feature animated film quality. The only complaint we have is we can't enough of the gameplay!
When you opened the game, you're greeted with a 3D model of an 18-hole golf course. At first you think it's the title screen, but a ball appears on the nearest course, and you suddenly realize that's the actual first hole of the course. The surprises don't stop there, you get a 3D rectangular block that can turn from a grass land to a golf course, to a water tank and a frozen ice block all in one location. The same block serves as several holes as the texture of the surface changes and new challenges present themselves with the evolving texture. Creative, you think! Then as the golf ball travels to ski slopes, to small ancient ruin models, to a waterfall, to a warhead? You follow the imagination of the creator of this dynamic golf course, and let the wonders of the course put you in awe.
In addition to texture of surface that provides challenges to your putting pleasure, the game also offers gravity changes on different surface as well. You get sink holes, a glacier, pyramid, lotus leaves on a lake and disappearing platforms. It's like putting a golf ball in Crash Bandicoot! You will need fight water current, steaming grids and there toads in your way too. Fun! After completing the course, you can go back to collect rainbow points and beat previous scores. With all 18 holes unlocked, you can start with any hole. The game keeps scores for both your putting and rainbow collecting.
Graphics & Sound
Graphics in Wonderputt is as imaginative as the gameplay. As you move from one hole after another, the game zooms closer to the hole youíre playing. The animation is film level quality and the perform is great. Though the gold course is on a relative small 3D model, everything looks incredibly sharp and physics of the game is very smooth. Some surface requires you to practice to learn it's characters so that you can control your golf ball in the correct speed and angle. Surprises are hidden and puzzles open your mind to the new dimension and new way of looking at the course. Form and function collide to create a perfect environment for the gameplay.
Wonderputt has a relaxing sound track and enjoyable sound effects. There are different sound FX pieces for each hole that has different surface textures that result in different sound. The audio corresponds to the ball rolling and hitting different surface and texture, and to the environment like steaming grid, waterfall, etc.
Wonderputt is an incredibly creative game that takes miniature golf genre to a whole new level. The creativity and the quality of the graphics stand out from the crowd, and the game is super easy to play and takes times to master. Itíll open the eyes of most jaded players to something new and fresh. We only wish there were 36 holes or perhaps entire tournament worth of rounds in the game.
