The Roklock v3 for iPad is a super rugged case with innovative mounting features. If you need to mount your iPad securely in a pre-defined place, or have access to ferrous metal (e.g. refrigerator) to utilize the magnets, this thing is pure tobasco.
Size and Fit
As with all rugged cases, the Roklock will add significant size/heft to your iPad. The case installs in seconds and stays secure by cleverly designed friction latches. Once installed, you will have access to all ports, buttons, and switches; as well as the speaker and rear-facing camera.
Features and Quality
The Roklock v3 is extremely rugged. The polycarbonate is thick (especially so on the corners), and is clearly designed to withstand a significant drop, although, I did not test this. The rear of the case has 6 rubber feet, which do a great job of keeping your iPad stationary on smooth surfaces, and also allow it to rest perfectly flat in spite of the Roklock mounting bracket (more to come on this) and the previously mentioned friction latches. Although there are many rugged iPad cases on the market, the Roklock case stands out from the crowd due to its extremely well-engineered mounting features.
The first of these is the Roklock, which consists of a heavy-duty mounting plate that can be permanently adhered to any flat surface. Once the adhesive cures, it's there for good, and will likely take paint/wallpaper/drywall with it when you remove it so plan ahead. All you do is press your Roklock case against this plate and twist to securely mount/unmount it. This is ideal for a shop or industrial environment where you won't mind looking at something permanently glued to the wall when it's not in use. However, it would also obviously work mounted on a tile or granite backsplash for those of you who don't mind gluing a mounting bracket somewhere in your kitchen. The second mounting system is called Maglok and is sold separately. For $29, you can install 6 rare earth magnets behind the rubber feet of the case. Once in place, your iPad will safely mount to any ferrous metal such as a refrigerator. These magnets will not harm your iPad in any way and do a great job of holding it securely. Be careful when installing these magnets, however. They will securely stick to each other if they come free of their mounting strips, and will be very difficult to remove due to the adhesive backing on one side that prevents them from sliding apart.
While not everybody needs to mount their iPad on a vertical surface, if you do, you need this case. Not only does the Roklock v3 provide two ways to accomplish this, it's rugged enough to be right at home in any environment where this capability may be needed. Additionally, the Roklock v3 comes with a screen protector for those of you who use them. The only design feature that I found lacking was the absence of rubberized edges. Although the case is designed to mount vertically, there are times when we all need to just lean our iPads against something, and hard plastic + smooth surface = frustration. Lastly, this case does not protect against moisture, although it was never intended to.
The Roklock v3 is very aggressively styled. As I've said previously, rugged is a style in itself, and this case does a great job of looking tough without looking industrial. The rubber feet are hexagon-shaped, and are accented by hexagon etchings on the backside of the case. The corners bulge slightly (obviously for increased drop protection) but they do so in such a way that avoids looking paranoid or absurd. The Roklock v3 comes in pitch black, gun metal, aqua, roksalt, smoke, raspberry ice, and white hot so you'll be sure to not only look tough, but fabulous as well.
The Roklock v3 is a rugged case with a very specific feature - vertical mounting. If this is important to you, you're not likely to find a case anywhere that does a better job of it. Even if you don't need this capability, however, you'll still likely be quite happy with it due to its great design and tough construction.
