iPhone 5 Battery Review: Concord Keystone ECO Booster 2.0i Review

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4

What's Hot: Compact and light, charges most smartphones, comes with Lightning and 30-pin adapters for iPhone models.

What's Not: The stand still uses the clumsy adhesive pad as way of steadying your device.

Concord Keystone made a popular battery booster for the iPhone 4/4S and Android smartphones, and with the release of the iPhone 5, the company released a new battery pack that's similar to the first one, the Keystone ECO Booster 2.0i. The design is similar to the first ECO Booster, but the capacity of the battery has been increased from 1400mAh to 2000mAh to accommodate more power-hungry devices. As with the first one, the Keystone ECO Booster 2.0i works with iPhone models as well as Android smartphones.

Design

Virtually unchanged in size from the last battery, the ECO Booster 2.0i measures 4 x 2.3 x 0.4 inches and weighs 2.5 ounces. The design is quite similar to the last gen as well: the thin battery pack has built-in Micro USB port for recharging with the included USB to Micro USB cable, a retractable Micro USB cable that can charge any smartphone with a Micro USB charging port, a cover that conceals the reusable adhesive gel pad that helps steady your phone and the a front cover that protects the adhesive gel from attracting dirt and dust when not in use, and when you attach this cover to the back, you can pop out the small stand to position your phone for media viewing or video chatting. The adhesive works with most surfaces including phones' plastic, metal or glass backs, and phone cases in most material. The adhesive can get pretty sticky, and if you push your phone too hard into the gel pad, you might have a hard time to take it off. So we advice you only to press the phone to the adhesive pad enough so that your phone won't slide off but not too strong that it sticks to the pad too much.

The built-in stand can position your iPhone and Android phone in landscape mode and though the leg of the stand doesn't seem thick or sturdy, the stand can hold any phone reasonably steady including the large Samsung Galaxy Note II. You'll need to use the adhesive pad as there's not other way to attach your phone to the battery pack. If you don't need to use the stand though, you can keep the stand leg folded and the battery flat. The cover that has stand built-in pops off accidentally sometimes. The Keystone ECO Booster 2.0i has a button that you can press to check the battery's power level and three LED lights that indicate charge level. Included in the package, the ECO Booster 2.0i comes with both a 30-pin connector for the iPhone 4/4S and previous iPhone models as well as a Lightning adapter for the iPhone 5. The Lightning adapter has a very tight fit, and you have to push it into the iPhone 5's charging port with some force, but our unit didn't break or damage anything when we pushed it into the charging port.

Features

The Keystone ECO Booster battery pack has a 2000mAh rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery. It can charge the iPhone 5 a full cycle from power zero to 100-percent, and it takes about 2:30-3 hours to fully charge it. If you use the Booster 2.0i with iPhone 4, it can provide power even longer. It's certain convenient for those who need an end-of-day top up on their smartphones, especially Android smartphones with larger screens or LTE that drains power faster, or on the road with an iPhone as it doubles the battery life on one charge.

The ECO Booster 2.0i has smart battery technology built-in for over-chraging, short circuit and over-discharging protection and has power pass through which means you can charge your device while it's connected to the battery and battery to power. The battery out puts 5.0V and 500mAh DC power and should work with most smartphone on the market. The battery itself takes about 5 hours to fully charge via USB, and it comes with a USB charging cable.

Conclusion

Increased in capacity, the Keystone ECO Booster 2.0i updates for the iPhone 5. The battery pack can charge most smartphones on the market and it can keep you phone propped up for media viewing or video chatting while it's being charged. The battery is compact and has enough power to double the runtime on an iPhone 5 and top up more power hungry phones. We like the inclusion of both 30-pin connector and a Lightning adapter. We wish the battery didn't still uses the clumsy adhesive pad to hold your devices in place.
