iPad Case Review: Cygnett Archive Classic Folio Case for iPad Air Review

Editor's Ratings: 3.5

What's Hot: Provides great bump, scuff, and even drop protection. Supports landscape viewing. Microfiber inner lining won't scratch your device.

What's Not: Entirely composed of soft materials so has a very sloppy feel to it. Magnetic enclosure is not SmartCover compatible. Very bulky.

The Archive Classic Folio Case provides standard folio case features for Apple's new iPad.

Size and Fit

Cygnett's Archive Classic folio case was one of the first available for Apple's new iPad Air. Unfortunately, Cygnett achieved this feat by forgoing meticulously molded plastic in favor of soft flexible materials. The result is a folio case that is surprisingly bulky and floppy. The bulkiness of the case is not a deal-breaker because it is quite light. However, the floppiness is a bit of a problem when you use the camera, as it is somewhat of a challenge to get all the cutouts to line up in such a way that they do not obscure the lens.

Features and Quality

The Archive Classic folio case is well-made, and is clearly composed of quality man-made materials. It provides an admirable level of protection from everyday mishaps, and once installed, will not come out except intentionally by the user. The soft construction gives it a loose or sloppy feel, however, that may not be to everyone's tastes. The Archive Classic supports hands-free landscape viewing, and the magnetic enclosure is a nice touch. Unfortunately, these magnets don't seem to be SmartCover compatible; an odd oversight considering the effort that must have gone into engineering the case with magnets in the first place. It feels good in your hand, though, and its inherent thickness makes it easy to hold onto; even if your hand perspires.

The Archive Classic comes in black and burgundy, and the perforated texture on the front panel gives it a polished and classy look.

The Archive Classic Folio is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it's well-made of quality materials. On the other hand, the lack of any rigid frame gives it somewhat of a loose feel that can sometimes obscure the rear camera lens. Recommended, with reservations.
