Portable Battery Review: Ventev Powercell 6000+ Review
      03/28/14 06:20 PM

The Ventev Powercell 6000+ is a combo wall charger and USB battery charger with 6000mAh Lithium-ion battery built-in. This is a great product for travelers who want to lighten their load. With one cable, you can charge your devices via AC without taking the power adapters, and you get an additional 6000mAh battery reserved on the wall charger to top up your tablets or fill up your smartphones. The Ventev Powercell 6000+ has powerful 3.1A output and two USB charging ports.

It's a great idea to combine an AC adapter with a portable battery, and the Ventev Powercell 6000+ works well as both. The battery/wall charger measures 4.72 x 2.8 x 0.94 inches and weighs 7.8 ounces. The Ventev powercell has matted gray surface with a power on/off button on the front as well as LED lights that indicate power levels, on/off status and charging status. Two USB charging ports live on the bottom side of the battery and AC prongs live on the back. The Ventev Powercell 6000+ doesn't come with charging cable as you can charge it directly from a power outlet, and it works with any mobile devices with USB charging options.

The Ventev Powercell 6000+ has a built-in NEMA AC charging plug that's foldable. It can sit flush with the battery pack when not in use. When you charge your device via AC power, you can connect a USB charging cable to the Ventev Powercell 6000+ and the pack will charge your device first and then recharge the internal battery after your device battery is fully charged. The AC charger is world power compatible, supporting 90-240V AC input. The Ventev has two USB output ports, 1A (5W) through one port and 2.1A (10W) through the Rapid Charge port. You can use the battery to charge two devices simultaneously and one of the devices can be a tablet. The battery has built-in safety features including short circuit and temperature protection.

We tested the Ventev Powercell 6000+ with several smartphones and tablets and found it could support them all. The rapid charge port did indeed charge devices with fast charging support speedily. With 6000mAh capacity, the Ventev battery can charge the iPhone 5s at least 3 times from 10% to full, and it works with Apple fast charging feature in the new iPhone. It takes less than 2 hours to charge the iPhone 5s fully. The Ventev can fill up the Sony Xperia Z1s 2.5 times from empty to full, and takes about 1.5 hours to charge the Android smartphone. The battery can charge at least twice for the LG G Flex and supports its fast charging feature built into the new Qualcomm chip. It takes just a little over 2 hours to fully charge the LG. While smartphones and smaller electronic gadgets like Bluetooth headsets enjoy the luxury of the large capacity, tablets give the Ventev Powercell 6000+ a run for its money. The battery only charged 50% of the iPad Air's battery and 32% of the new Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 tablet in our tests. Granted, the new Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 has very high requirements for mobile charging solutions including some AC chargers, the Ventev Powercell 6000+ has good enough quality and strong enough power to charge it. The rapid charging also worked for tablets in our tests - the battery usually took about 2 hours to dump all its power when charging tablets through the rapid charge port.

For its weight and size, the Ventev Powercell 6000+ is a great companion for frequent travelers who take multiple devices on the road. You save the weight and space by leaving multiple AC adapters at home and enjoy the extra 6000mAh juice that can easily refill any smartphone or top up your tablet. The built-in AC charger works worldwide and has built-in safety protection. The output power via two USB is convenient to charge two things at once and the rapid charging port is very handy for those who are often in a hurry.

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4.5
What's Hot: AC charger and portable battery combo is a winner, dual charging and fast charging work well.
What's Not: Has enough power to top up a tablet, but not much more.
