Griffin Survivor Core for iPhone 6 Plus Case Review
      10/23/14 12:51 PM

The Survivor Core by Griffin is a sleek minimalist case that offers impressive drop protection at a modest price. The Survivor Core adds very little weight or size to your iPhone 6 Plus. In fact, the only obvious way to tell it's installed is by the heavily reinforced corners as the rest of the case has a very low profile. It installs easily thanks to its flexible construction, and fits perfectly.

Features and Quality

Over the years, I've reviewed quite a few minimalistic cases, and while most of them were pretty good (some were actually very good), none of them actually offered any significant protection against drops. To be clear, none of them were actually designed to protect against drops, nor were they marketed to be something they weren't. As I said, some were quite good, but none of them really worked for me, thanks to the environment of my real job, and my tendency to take my phone places where minimalist cases would be inappropriate. And then, along comes the Griffin Survivor Core. Although it offers no moisture protection of any kind, it does offer substantial real-world drop protection; and does so while maintaining some impressively sleek lines.

Rated to withstand drops from 6 meters onto concrete, it's the first slim case that I've ever chosen for regular daily use. Its secret is its heavily reinforced corners, and its TPE rubber construction. In case you're curious, TPE stands for thermoplastic elastomer, which is a polymer that possesses traits of both rubber and plastic. It's flexible, but not too flexible; and rigid, but not too rigid. The result is a flexibility/strength ratio somewhere in the goldilocks zone, at least for this purpose. As I said, the Core offers no moisture protection, but if you're looking for a daily use case that will actually protect your phone from its most likely source of damage without making it too big to comfortably fit in your pocket, look no further than the Griffin Survivor Core. This is more important than ever, considering the awesome size of the iPhone 6 Plus.

Style

The Survivor Core comes in three colors (black/purple/white), and its slim, yet subtly rugged looks make it an attractive case that would be at home anywhere.

Summary

The Survivor Core by Griffin is a fantastic daily use case that actually offers substantial drop protection without adding significant bulk or weight. It looks great, feels great, and won't break your budget. Highly recommended.
