Logitech Protection+ Power Battery Case for iPhone 5/5s Review
      11/28/14 05:02 PM

Logitech's Protection+ Power is a truly rugged battery case for your iPhone 5/5s that is compatible with Logitech's excellent line of +Mounts. The Protection+ case adds almost nothing to the width of your iPhone 5/5s. However, due to the requisite integrated Lightning Connector, you will pick-up an extra 1/2" at the base, and the integrated battery will approximately double your iPhone's thickness. It's flexible 1-piece construction and slightly hinged Lightning Connector means it installs/uninstalls in seconds with no bezels or gaskets to wear-out or break. As expected, it fits perfectly. All buttons are covered, although the mute switch is not. Lastly, a reinforced headphone jack extender is included due to the port being deeply recessed within the case.

Features and Quality

The Protection+ Power is that rare unicorn of a battery case that actually manages to not only fulfill my need for extra power, but also provides significant drop protection as well. Not only does it feature an 1800mAh battery (which should double your usage), the Protection+ Power features a MIL STD 810G ruggedness rating, which means it had to withstand repeated 6' drops onto plywood-covered concrete. This is especially impressive considering the extra weight that the battery adds, which translates into greater force on impact. Thankfully, it is also compatible with Logitech's +Trip and +Drive mounts (additional purchase) thanks to the integrated metal band on the case's back. The +Trip clips to your air conditioner vent, and the +Drive is an unbelievably powerful suction mount that adheres to your windshield. Once installed, both of these mounts will firmly hold your phone in place thanks to their rare earth magnets. To tell the truth, I was pretty skeptical about the +Drive as I have seen more than one suction cup fail in my lifetime. I can assure you, however, that the +Drive suction cup maintains an iron grip that I couldn't pull off by force (although it came off easily by pulling on the tab at its base according to the instructions). It manages this by mechanically creating a strong vacuum rather than relying on your ability to do so. Holding it against the glass and turning the dial to the lock position causes the suction cup to flatten far more completely than could be accomplished by simply pressing it against the glass. I attached one to my car for a week and still couldn't pull it off by force. Yeah, you can trust it (assuming you install it correctly!).

Style

The black/grey Protection+ Power case has an understated and professional look, However, the white version has a bright blue bezel, which gives it a pleasantly informal and whimsical look. Both share the same physical design.

Summary

Logitech's Protection+ Power battery case is the best battery case I've yet reviewed thanks to the impressive level of protection it provides. I know I've said this before about other battery cases, but Logitech has upped the ante with this product. Highly recommended.
