13" vs. 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display Comparison Smackdown

Here's a comparison that's less common, yet important: the 13" Retina MacBook Pro vs. the 15" Retina MacBook Pro. Once you've decided you're going Mac and want that Retina display, how do you decide between these two? Given the steep price difference, cost will be the deciding factor for some of you. The 13" model starts at $1,299 vs. $1,999 for the 15" Retina Mac. As you might guess, you do get more RAM and a bigger SSD in the 15 inch model (16 gigs RAM and a 256 gig SSD), and that configuration costs $1,699 in the 13" model, narrowing the price gap a bit.

Beyond the 2 inches of display real estate, the 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro brings a quad core Intel i7 CPU, vs. the dual core i5 in the 13 inch Retina (even the i7 is dual core on the 13"). That means the 15" Retina MacBook Pro is a powerhouse among laptops, despite its light weight and slim design. The 15" has Intel Iris Pro 5200 graphics vs. Intel Iris 5100 graphics for another serious speed bump. If you buy the $2,500 15" MPB Retina model, you'll get switchable graphics with the NVIDIA GT750M card with 2 gigs GDDR5 dedicated memory. That's an excellent choice for serious 3D gamers, as well as those who do significant 1080p video editing or CAD work. For those of you who play casual or less demanding games and don't do many hours of video editing each week, the 15" model is overkill.

The 13" MacBook Pro with Retina display is for those of you who prize portability, but you want a stunning display and more horsepower than the MacBook Air offers. It's 1 pound lighter than the 15" Mac, and the power adapter is half the weight. It's a great choice for those with average to somewhat demanding processing needs and it outperforms the ULV Intel CPUs used in Ultrabooks. There are many more points to compare, so watch our video below!
