Huawei TalkBand B1 Review
      #47576 - 01/15/15 08:56 PM

The Huawei TalkBand B1 is a Bluetooth headset that also works as a smart wireless band that tracks your steps and your sleep times. The band's 1.4" flexible OLED display keeps you abreast of the information it's tracking and the band's IP57 rated water and dust resistant body can accompany you to the beach or at the gym or even in the shower. The Huawei TalkBand B1 works with most Android and iPhone models and comes with a free app that gives you more detailed information. The Huawei TalkBand B1 comes in black and the wristband comes in five colors.

The Huawei TalkBand B1 is a little larger than the Fitbit One and heavier thanks to the built-in Bluetooth headset. The TalkBand B1 measures 2.5" x 0.76" x 0.57" (length, width and thickness) and the wristband comes in two sizes. The large wristband fits users with 6.3" to 7.82" wrists and the small wristband fits 5.31" to 6.7" wrists. The wristband on the Huawei feels smooth and the outer side has a slight texture. There are six size-adjustment slots on the band and the clasp has two metal pins to secure the band. The clasp is a lot easier to use than the ones on the Fitbit band. At the tip of the wristband you'll find the USB charging port cleverly concealed under the silicone hood.

The band has a side button that covers over the TalkBand B1's only control button and it allows you to cycle through the information displayed on the TalkBand B1. The information includes time, battery and Bluetooth status, steps taken so far in the day and a progress bar towards the goal, calories burned and the total sleep time. There's also a button on the top end of the band that allows you to pop out the TalkBand B1 and use it as a Bluetooth headset.

The Huawei TalkBand B1 is a smart companion that tracks your movement each day and reminds you to get up and walk around if you live a sedentary life or sit in the office all day. It's designed to be a night companion as well that should track how many times you wake up and fall asleep and the lengths of your light and deep sleeping times. It can also wake you up in the morning with vibrations. When a call comes in, the TalkBand B1 will display the phone number and you can pop it out of its docking bay and use it as a Bluetooth headset. Convenient!

The first thing people ask when they see the Huawei TalkBand B1 is "does it work like a Fitbit?" The answer is that it's different from Fitbit. The TalkBand tracks only the steps you take during the day and your progress level towards your daily goal. It doesn't offer any exercise features such as tracking your run using a map or logging a workout so that it can make the distinction between just normal walking around the office or in a grocery store and intense workout sessions. Huawei offers a free app for both iOS and Android that lets you keep track of your walking steps, distance and time, and calories burned, but that's about it. In our tests, we found the TalkBand B1 did recognize it when you spin on a stationary bike, however it didn't track the time on a rowing machine and convert it into steps. You do get a daily, weekly and monthly graph of your steps on the phone app. So to answer the question, the Fitbit in conjunction with apps like MyFitneesPal is for those who are actively working on losing, maintaining or gaining weight while the Huawei TalkBand B1 is a Bluetooth headset that reminds you to be active throughout the day.

Size comparison with the Fitbit Flex (on the right):

As a sleep tracker, the Huawei TalkBand B1 does only the basic tracking as well. It can keep track of the length of your sleep; and if you take a nap during the day, it'll tally the naptime together with the nighttime sleep into a single number. It also records your light sleep time and deep sleep time during the night. It should also track how many times you wake up and fall back to sleep, but in our tests the band didn't track as sophisticated data. It only records the first time you fall asleep. The TalkBand B1 is a good alarm in the morning. It vibrates to wake you up and the smart alarm features can wake you up a little bit of ahead of the time and it vibrates when it senses you're falling back to sleep after the alarm goes off.

The Huawei TalkBand B1 has built-in Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC for fast pairing. The TalkBand B1 paired with all phones in our tests easily. Voice quality is so-so on the TalkBand B1, not the best voice quality we've heard on a Bluetooth headset but it's adequate to hold a conversation. The volume is on the low side for the outgoing voice but adequate on the incoming voice. The display shows only incoming call phone number but not Caller ID even if the number is in your Contact. The TalkBand B1 comes with three ear gels in different sizes.

Battery Life

The Huawei TalkBand B1 has a built-in rechargeable battery that's 90mAh in capacity. It can power up to 7 hours of talk time, 14 days of standby (with no Bluetooth connection) and about 5 days usage time with very light talking as a headset. The placement of the charging port is ingenious compared to the Fitbit models that require you to remove them from the bands to dock into a charging jacket. The TalkBand B1 has a small USB adapter at the tip of the wristband that you can plug into any USB charger. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the device. The TalkBand B1 has a battery status icon and the phone app offers band's battery level in percentage.

The Huawei TalkBand B1 is a different kind of device from the active fitness bands like the Fitbit or the Smartwatches that have more and more functions. The TalkBand B1 lets you check the time and your steps quickly while giving you a way to carry your Bluetooth headset with you at all times. When the headset is docked in the band, it can be immersed in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. The TalkBand B1 works with iOS 5.0 and newer devices and Android 4.0 and never devices. If you need to keep an eye on your active level and your sleep status, the TalkBand B1 can do the job in addition to working as a Bluetooth headset.
