HP Omen 15 Video Review - a Slim and Sexy Gaming Laptop You Could Take to Work
      #47427 - 12/16/14 04:12 PM

With the new HP Omen 15, HP’s back in the seriously sexy and slim gaming laptop arena. In fact, you might say this is the first truly awesome looking gaming laptop they’ve ever made—the Envy 15 and 17 inch models circa 2011-2012 were good gaming machines with less inspired designs and graphics. The Omen 15 weighs just 4.68 lbs. and is 0.78” (19.8mm) at its thickest point (the 15” MacBook Pro is 0.71”). HP bought Voodoo nearly 10 years ago, and this is the first time since the first and second gen Envy models that we’ve seen them resurrect what’s left of that gaming laptop and desktop company. It’s got the cool looks and impossibly slim design you might’ve expected from Voodoo back in the day. The textured black aluminum body is wedge-shaped, or more accurately trapezoidal, and it looks cunning yet staid and chic enough to take to the office. There are no garish logos on the lid and the RGB LED love sticks to the keyboard zone, not the outer body.

Though as thin and light as some 15” Ultrabooks, the Omen packs serious power with faster graphics than the Dell XPS 15 and high end 15” Retina MacBook Pro (it matches the $1,700 MSI Ghost GS60-003 for graphics). The laptop runs on the quad core i7-4710HQ CPU with switchable Optimus NVIDIA GTX 860M 2GB graphics, 8 or 16 gigs of RAM and M.2 SSD drives (128, 256 and 512 gig options. It has Intel WiFi 802.11ac with strong reception and Bluetooth. The 15.6” IPS gloss touch screen with wide color gamut and oversized Synaptics trackpad make life easier when using this as a productivity laptop in Windows 8.1. All ports are on the rear, and these include 4 USB 3.0 ports, 3.5mm combo audio, HDMI and mini DisplayPort. A USB Ethernet adapter is included in the box. The Omen 15 starts at $1,500 and is just appearing in stores now. If you’re interested in a more affordable and less hot alternative to the 2014 Razer Blade, this is worth a look.
