Seidio OBEX Case for iPhone 6 Review
      #48066 - 05/21/15 05:09 PM

Seidio Obex is a solid entry into the increasingly crowded field of iPhone 6 waterproof cases. It's slimmer than most, but utilizes a screen cover instead of forming a seal around your iPhone's glass as some competing products do.

Size and Fit

The OBEX is surprisingly sleek for a waterproof case. In fact, at just a bit over 3/8" thick, it's easily one of the slimmest, (if not the slimmest) waterproof cases available. As you'd expect from a waterproof case, the OBEX fits the iPhone 6 with absolute precision.

Features and Quality

When it comes to iPhone cases, it's all about balancing protection against accessibility and size. Until the technology advances a bit more, don't be surprised that a protective case restricts your usage or feels bulky. Conversely, don't expect a slim accessible case to provide much protection. In the OBEX, Seidio has done a very good job balancing these imperatives. As previously noted, it's surprisingly slim for a case with an IP68 waterproof rating (submersible), and a drop rating of MIL-STD-810F (withstands 6-ft drops). To achieve this, however, they have opted to use a plastic screen cover instead of sealing it with a gasket on the face of your phone. As screen protectors go, this is a good one, however. reasonably responsive, tough, and crystal clear. Obviously, it can't match the clarity and sensitivity of an uncovered screen, so if you have a problem with screen protectors, this may not be a good choice for an everyday case. If you work in a hostile environment that necessitates this level of protection, however, you may actually appreciate the extra layer of armor the screen protector provides. In particular, using the Obex at the beach will protect your iPhone's screen from sand, while "screenless" cases will not. This is important because sand contains quartz, which is hard enough to scratch Gorilla Glass. The only real complaint I have about the OBEX is the fact that the openings for the Lightning and headphone ports are not large enough to accommodate some 3rd party peripherals. Lastly, considering the environment to which it is likely to be subjected, I would like to see Seidio incorporate a way to attach a lanyard or strap to the OBEX.

Although I have seen various customer reviews of this case complaining about its performance when using your iPhone's camera flash, my review unit had no such difficulty. The camera and flash apertures are both covered with anti-reflective acrylic, and are sealed against the phone to prevent the flash from reflecting back into the camera lens.

The OBEX is available in black/grey, white/grey, pink/grey, yellow/grey, and clear/grey. In particular, the yellow/grey and clear/grey options are quite sharp looking in a waterproof case.

The Seidio OBEX is a very good waterproof case that is slim enough for daily use. The incorporated screen protector provides an additional layer of protection not provided by screenless cases, however, some may feel it makes the case too inaccessible for daily use.
